Since 2004, RNE has made progress in establishing, shaping and improving a harmonised timetabling process for international train path requests.

RailNetEurope has gradually taken over responsibilities for the core rail infrastructure processes in international timetabling.

RailNetEurope expanded and optimised these processes, including harmonised medium-term planning for infrastructure capacity and products, e.g. train paths and information services.

Handbook for the international timetabling process, Pathfinder Guidelines 2009 and path request form

RNE has published the following documents:

  • a handbook on international timetabling processes for customers which, in general, are Railway Undertakings.
This handbook describes the processes involved in the co-ordination of the international timetable in all its design phases, from medium to short-term planning. It is applied by all RNE members
  • a Pathfinder process guideline which clearly defines roles and responsabilities
  • a path request form for international train path requests and studies which is accepted by all RNE members.

These documents are valid from now on and shall be used for the timetabling process.

Based on the experiences that will be made with the new handbook, RNE will of course go on shaping business together with the customers.

Customers can download a copy of this handbook here, as well as the RNE study and path request form, or will be provided with a copy of these documents by the OSS Managers of the RNE members.

    • every year on the second Monday in April
  • deadlines for drafting the international timetable:
    • every year on Monday, at the beginning of the 13th week after the path request date.
  • deadlines for final answers to customers:
    • every year on Monday, at the beginning of the 18th week after the path request date, lasting 2 weeks
As regards the timetabling process for the timetable of 2009 (process starting in 2008), the following deadlines have been set:
